How Much Does It Cost to Clean a Commercial Ice Machine in Clearwater?

Technician cleaning a commercial ice machine

Short answer: At Crystal Ice, a professional preventive maintenance (PM) cleaning costs $295 per visit. If you rent your machine from us, from $160/month, scheduled cleanings are included.

Other companies price it their own way. Before comparing quotes, ask what is actually included. A quick sanitizer rinse and a full descale-and-inspect visit are very different jobs.

    What you get for $295

A visit usually takes about 60–90 minutes, depending on the machine. Paperwork documents the service; it does not guarantee an inspection result.

    • Deep sanitizing of every surface that touches water
    • Scale and mineral deposit removal
    • A full mechanical inspection to help catch problems before a breakdown
    • A filter check, plus a recommendation if replacement is due
    • Service paperwork you can show the health inspector

How often should you clean it?

Crystal Ice schedules standard preventive maintenance every 6 months. Follow your manufacturer's instructions and clean sooner if conditions warrant. High-volume bars, coastal kitchens and healthcare sites may need more frequent service, assessed individually; this is not a blanket legal interval or an included quarterly rental schedule.

Why Clearwater machines have it harder

    • Salt air: near Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and Sand Key, salty, humid air can accelerate corrosion of condenser coils and metal parts.
    • Humidity and heat: warm, wet air encourages mold and slime in a machine that is always damp.
    • Kitchen grease and dust: air-cooled machines draw in airborne kitchen debris, which can collect on the condenser, restrict heat rejection and reduce ice output.
    • Hard water: minerals leave scale on the evaporator, which can lead to smaller, cloudier cubes and slower harvests.

Health inspections: ice counts as food

DBPR's Ice Protection bulletin says ice must come from potable water from an approved source. Clean and sanitize equipment as the manufacturer specifies, as needed to prevent soil or mold, and after possible contamination. Do not use machine ice during a boil-water notice.

The 2013 bulletin cites the 2009 Food Code; it is historical guidance, not a statement of today's adopted edition. DBPR's current inspections page identifies adoption of the 2017 FDA Food Code effective November 1, 2019. An ice-machine finding depends on the conditions observed; mold is not automatically assigned one violation tier. Keep cleaning logs and service paperwork without treating them as a passing guarantee.

Warning signs you've waited too long

Do not serve ice you suspect is contaminated. Arrange professional cleaning and assessment rather than repeatedly resetting the machine.

    • Black, pink or orange slime inside the bin or around the ice chute
    • A musty or sour smell that may indicate contamination and needs prompt attention
    • Cloudy ice, flakes or specks, or a strange taste in drinks
    • Smaller cubes or slower production than usual

What your staff can do between visits

    • Keep the scoop out of the ice in a clean holder.
    • Never chill bottles, food or other containers in the ice bin.
    • Wipe the exterior and keep vents and the surrounding condenser area clear without opening internal panels.
    • Track the filter change date.
    • Use only manufacturer-specified cleaner and sanitizer for permitted operator cleaning, and follow the cleaning cycle. Isolate power as the manual directs; leave electrical and refrigerant work to a technician.

Is skipping a cleaning really cheaper?

Not usually. Scale and dirty condensers make a machine work harder, and a postponed $295 visit may lead to a repair bill. For an owned machine, request a written repair quote before work. Repair work carries a 90-day warranty. Rental repair parts and labor are included.
